Happy Women in Horror month!

Happy new year! Happy Women in Horror month! Yes it is a bit late, but I mean it nonetheless. I had some recent wonderful news that will now change some of the way I approach the blog here for the next year. I was recently accepted to a Master's (I still don't like that they are gendering this.) program in Scotland, which I am over the moon excited about! It's a program that's special to my art-nerd heart and is something that will also expand my knowledge on how artists created their work throughout the centuries. Plus I will get to apply some of this new knowledge to my own work, it's a practical degree and it's awesome. I'll talk more about it in a later post.

So what does this mean for the blog? Well, it means I won't be doing them every month like last year, I just will not have the time. I have to move countries as well as setup a new home in Scotland so that's a lot. Also this is an intense one-year-long program, so a lot of my time will be devoted to my studies. I will be doing my best to have a blog here every other month, as well as my new project Artemisias's Axe and the Corpse's Tongue, our new inclusive horror collective getting up and running. Thankfully I have some help from my loving partner and friends. I am really trying this year, to build a better practice that doesn't rely on me burning myself out. Being kinder to myself is one of my main goals this year and that also happens here in the online space.

I will be doing mini blogs more for store updates since we have a ton of new merch in the shop. Also posting about my move, the new horror fests I'll be attending as well as any markets or exhibitions I'm involved in.

As for the queer in horror blog focus that is still a thing don't worry. I just want to make this blog series more collaborative as in connecting with other queer horror creators and having them talk here on the blog or maybe do their own guest posts. I'm talking to some people and I do not want to rush this, so it will be taking a bit longer than anticipated to create, but as I am doing a new format this year I think it is well worth the wait. So keep your eyes peeled for that.

Currently it is Women in Horror month as I type this. I have created a special gift pack and original art (see above photo) for the 10th anniversary of this amazing event created by the incredible Hannah Neurotica! The gift pack includes one enamel pin (pictured to the right), prints, postcards and some rad stickers. Have a look in my shop for more info. There is also a WIHMx sale page if you look in the drop down menu where selected items are 10% off!

In other awesome news, I am in a women in horror exhibition along with 30 other artists at The Liverpool Horror Club in the UK who had an amazing event with talks, art and a screening of Mary Harron's American Psycho all of which are celebrating women in horror month. So if you're in the UK and want a place to celebrate women in horror the exhibit is on till the 17th.

Last, but not least I am still working on my Nature of Death oil painting series. I have finished 4 out of the nine I started last year. Photos of the finished works will be released on my website as soon as we are done moving. I will be putting it on hold until we are settled in Scotland because I need to find a studio space to paint. This year I want a space that is detached from my home, so I can have that separation. Last year it really added to my stress of living to constantly be confronted with my work when just walking into our living room. We've been researching and have found some affordable spaces, but first we need to move there!

Ok, that's all I got for now, but I will be updating like I said with mini posts just to say hi and show some signs of life, too. Hope you are all celebrating women in horror in your own way this month and also throughout the year. Let me know how you're celebrating in the comments or hit me up on twitter @jessfonk, I would be happy to chat with you!

Stay safe out there, it's a crazy world right now, but remember we got our community and there are some great people who would be willing to support or talk to you (me included), you just gotta say hi! Trust me, I know how hard that is, but I have made some wonderful friendships just by starting out saying hi. <3

There is a really cool WIHMx art challenge going on @ insta for the whole month and it would be awesome if more people joined in. All levels of artists welcome! Find out more about the creator who started this challenge @livlingborn on instagram.
